the states
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are all of the states in the southeast region.
landforms
the Southeast region is a special region. The land is elevated differently, there are mountains, there are many things. There is a coastal plain that goes from Virginia to Louisiana. The water level rises and lowers with the tide every day. When the water rises, water flows into this area. When the tide goes back, the water levels drop. The coastal plain will end at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Some southerners call the foothills Piedmont which, in french, means "foot of the mountains". Beyond the foothills are the Appalachian Mountains. Some peaks in this mountain chain are over 6,000 feet high. Elevation really effects life in the southeast. For example, the elevation effects the climate in an area. Higher areas of land are the harder areas to farm. The soil is rocky and hard for roots to spread through. Lower areas of land have richer, softer soil. It is much easier for soil to grow. The elevation also effects travel too. Traveling in the lowlands is much easier than traveling in the highlands because the lowlands allow you to travel faster and easier. But the highlands make your travel slower and harder.
WaterwayS
the southeast contains a coastline and lots of rivers. Lots of the rivers started in the Appalachian mountains. On the east side of the mountains, rivers go across the foothills and straight into the Atlantic ocean. in the southern part of the Appalachian mountains, water flows into the Gulf of Mexico. In the in the west part of the mountains, the water flows into the Mississippi River. Southern people use the rivers and the ocean to have fun. That means going swimming, riding boats, and fishing.people also use the waterways for transportation. Shipping by boat is an easier way to move crops and goods to places far away. Lots of port cities grew along the coast where the rivers touch the sea. A really busy port city is Miami, it's located close to the south tip of Florida. A lot of its trades are with Central America and South America. Because of this, Miami has nicknamed itself the "Gateway of the Americas". The port of Miami is also shared with a lot (and I mean a lot) of cruise ships. In Miami, millions of people come and go each year. A lot of people who leave take the cruise ships to go on a vacation. That must be why Miami has also nicknamed itself the "cruise capital of the world".
